Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic treatment that involves creating micro-injuries in the skin using tiny needles to stimulate collagen production and promote skin rejuvenation.

Micro-needling is commonly used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture. It can also be used to enhance the absorption of skincare products, making them more effective.

Studies have shown that PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) can expedite the healing process of tissues and reduce the appearance of pigmentation and acne scarring when used with microneedling. PRP treatment involves using the patient's own blood as a resource to isolate the platelets with a centrifuge.

What to expect?

Before treatment

Our Nurse Practitioners will review your chart with you and confirm your skincare and what are your beauty goals.

After cleansing your skin, your Nurse Practitioner will apply a topical anesthetic. This will need to set for at least 30 minutes before microneedling begins. Some offices may ask you to apply the anesthetic before you come into the office.

Stop any retinols, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, hydroquinone and benzoyl peroxide products 48 hours before your treatment.

During treatment

During a micro-needling procedure, a device with small needles is passed over the skin to create controlled micro-injuries. This process triggers the body’s natural healing response and promotes the production of collagen, elastin, and other essential growth factors for healthy skin.

After treatment

Bruises and inflammation, including swelling and redness, are the most common side effects. They typically appear immediately after the procedure and clear within four to six days.

Avoid sun exposure for 3 days and if possible 10 days. Apply a minimum of SPF 30 every 2 hours. May use mineral makeup after 24 hours. Restart regular skin care regimen in 48 hours and Retin-A in 72 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling with PRP Treatments

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a form of therapy that utilizes instruments containing rows of thin needles that penetrate the dermis to a uniform depth, creating a controlled skin injury. This controlled skin injury induces rapidly-healing micropunctures with subsequent stimulation of collagen and elastin fiber production, resulting in skin remodeling.

What are possible side effects of having microneedling done ?

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Skin irritation

  • Infection (rare)

  • Slight pain

  • Minimal improvement

What is Plasma Rich Platelet (PRP)?

Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets). The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that are very important in the healing of injuries.

PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

To develop a PRP preparation, blood must first be drawn from a patient.

The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased by spinning the blood down during a process called centrifugation. These platelets are then injected into the injured site.

What to avoid after microneedling procedure?

What Should I Avoid After My PRP Microneedling Appointment? After your PRP Microneedling appointment, you should avoid exposure to sunlight. You should also avoid high heat from things such as the sun, steam room, hot shower, sauna, blow dryer, and hot yoga.

How long do you leave plasma on after microneedling?

Are there any contraindications for micronedling ?

We recommend to keep the PRP on your face for at least 12-24 hours so that it'll continue to heal your skin. The longer you leave the PRP on your face, the better the results will be. In most cases, you'll be able to return to your normal routine the next day.

  • Active acne, especially inflammatory lesions

  • Active herpes labialis or other localized infection in the treatment area, including warts.

  • Moderate-to-severe chronic skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis

  • Patients with extreme keloidal tendencies

  • Immunosuppressed patients, including patients on chemotherapy

Generally, you'll need treatment once every month for three consecutive

months. Many people find that this three-month period is optimal for

achieving the desired results with PRP microneedling.
